Violet found her way back to the suite where she’d been staying to quickly change her clothes before dinner. The outfit she’d been wearing was covered in dust and little bits of grass from lying on her belly in the field.

She put on a simple black shift instead, and the same suede flats, combing out her hair, which was wavy from being put up in a bun half-damp. She pinned it to the side with a tortoise-shell hair slide she found on the vanity, and then applied a little mascara and lipstick. The cosmetics were some sort of fancy French brand, in gleaming gold tubes.

God, these people lived a different life. The mascara glided onto her lashes like smooth, sleek oil. The lipstick colored her mouth a luscious, rich hue like she’d been eating berries. The tubes had a substantial heft and gave a satisfying click when she opened and closed them.

Everything in this house was made to most exacting standards. She had never known that her clothes and cosmetics and furniture back home were shit until she experienced real luxury in the form of this cloud-soft bed, the heavy down duvet, the extraordinarily comfortable and chic shoes on her feet.

But what was it that paid for all this?

What was this empire that Violet was being offered?

Once she had made herself presentable, Violet stole down the hallway in search of the dining room where she’d eaten lunch with Mr. Turgenev.

She was beginning to learn the layout of the chateau, or at least this particular wing. After only two wrong turns, she found the heavy double doors of the dining room.

Pushing her way inside, she saw the other diners already seated. Every eye turned toward her, where she stood in the doorway.

Mr. Turgenev sat at the head of the table, looking crisp and elegant in his dark suit. To his left, with his back to the door, sat the blond young man that Violet had seen at Pravda. He turned around to survey Violet, his face grave and unsmiling.

Next to the blond man sat an older gentleman with a large, hawkish nose, thinning hair, and pale blue eyes. He looked keenly up and down Violet’s person, smiling at her with his thin lips pressed together.

Across the table sat an attractive young woman with wide-set green eyes that were slightly slanted up at the corners like a cat’s, and straight, dark hair parted in the center. She wore an expensive-looking silk blouse, and large antique diamond earrings. She smiled at Violet in a much more genuine manner, showing dimples on either side of her mouth.

Next to her sat another man, about ten years older, with slicked-back dark hair, and an arrogant expression. He wore a flashy suit with a bright pocket square and ostentatious cuff links.

Violet immediately felt that she had not dressed appropriately for dinner. Everyone else looked much more formal and polished. Still, she stepped into the room, saying, “Good evening.
